Most “Failed Compressors” Aren’t
A compressor that won’t start has a handful of possible causes, and most of them cost a fraction of a compressor. Start relays and run capacitors fail far more often than the windings they serve. Contactors pit and stop passing current on one leg. A condenser fan dies, head pressure climbs, and the compressor cuts out on its internal overload — then cools down, restarts, and does it again all afternoon. Every one of those presents as “the compressor keeps shutting off,” and every one of them is a routine repair.
That is why our diagnosis starts outside the compressor: supply voltage under load, the start components, the contactor, the condenser coil and fan, and only then the compressor itself — winding resistance, insulation to ground, and whether it pumps. Condemning a compressor takes a meter, not a hunch. When someone tells you a compressor is gone without showing you numbers, get a second opinion before you approve the invoice.
Why Commercial Refrigeration Compressors Actually Fail

When a compressor really does die, it almost never dies of old age alone. It dies of operating conditions that were wrong for months. A condenser coil packed with kitchen grease and dust drives head pressure and winding temperature up until the insulation cooks. A slow refrigerant leak starves the compressor of the cool suction gas it depends on for motor cooling. Liquid refrigerant flooding back on a system with a failed expansion valve washes oil out of the crankcase and slugs the valves. Short-cycling — from a bad control, an oversized unit, or a door that never seals — hammers the motor with start current it was never designed to see hourly.
The pattern matters because it changes the repair. Swap a compressor that died of a dirty condenser without cleaning the condenser, and the new one dies the same death. Part of a competent compressor job is naming the condition that killed the old one and fixing that too.
Hermetic, Semi-Hermetic and Scroll — What You’re Running Changes the Repair

Reach-in coolers, undercounter units and most self-contained equipment run welded hermetic compressors — sealed cans that are replaced, not rebuilt, and the economics are about matching the right replacement and doing the changeout cleanly. Larger walk-in condensing units and market racks run semi-hermetic or scroll compressors, where there are real decisions: a semi-hermetic can sometimes take a valve plate or gasket repair instead of a full swap, and scroll failures are usually electrical, which puts the attention back on what fed the failure.
Multi-compressor racks in grocery and convenience stores are their own discipline: one failed compressor on a rack shifts load onto the others, and the store keeps running while everything left works harder. That buys time, but not much of it — a rack running a compressor down should be looked at the same week, not the same quarter.
Burnouts Contaminate the Whole System
An electrical burnout doesn’t just kill the compressor — it fills the refrigerant circuit with acid and carbonized oil. Installing a fresh compressor into that without cleanup is how a two-week callback happens. A proper burnout job includes an acid test, oversized liquid-line and suction filter-driers to scrub the system, and a follow-up visit to check the driers and oil after the system has run. It is more work on day one and dramatically cheaper than doing the compressor twice.
Repair the Compressor, Replace the Compressor, or Replace the Unit
Three numbers drive this call: the age of the equipment, the cost of the compressor job, and what refrigerant the system runs. A five-year-old walk-in condensing unit with a failed compressor is nearly always worth the swap. A fifteen-year-old unit on a phased-down refrigerant, with a rusted coil and a compressor job quoted at more than half the price of new equipment, usually isn’t — you’d be putting a new engine in a car with a rotted frame. We quote the compressor job and tell you plainly which side of that line your equipment sits on; the decision stays yours.

Recovery, evacuation and recharge are part of every compressor changeout, done by EPA-certified technicians — and on older systems the price and availability of the refrigerant itself can tip the repair-or-replace decision. When the Compressor Dies at the Worst Time
A compressor failure on a Friday night with a full walk-in is a product emergency before it is a mechanical one. Why does my refrigeration unit keep tripping the breaker?
A compressor drawing locked-rotor current at every start will trip breakers, but so will a failed start capacitor, a shorted fan motor, or a contactor welding closed. Breaker trips mean an electrical measurement problem, not automatically a compressor problem — and every restart into a genuine locked rotor does more winding damage, so stop resetting it and have it measured.
How long should a commercial refrigeration compressor last?
Ten to fifteen years is a fair expectation for a compressor running on clean coils with a correct charge; racks with staged compressors often go longer. The spread is operating conditions, not luck — the same compressor model lasts twice as long in a maintained system as it does over a condenser coil nobody has cleaned since installation.
Can I run my other equipment while one rack compressor is down?
Usually yes, briefly — that’s the point of a rack. The remaining compressors pick up the load and cases hold temperature. But they’re now running longer and hotter than designed, so treat it as a same-week repair, watch case temperatures at the far end of the lineup, and don’t add product load you don’t have to.
